Freud Router Bits

Freud Tools

Freud Router Bits are precision-crafted in Italy with exclusive TiCo Hi-Density Carbide and the signature red Perma-SHIELD non-stick coating. Designed for shaping, profiling, and edge detailing on wood and composite materials, Freud bits deliver clean results with less sanding. The anti-kickback design on larger bits provides an added margin of safety. Available at Windsor Plywood locations across Canada.

Features

  • TiCo Hi-Density Carbide -- harder and more durable than standard carbide, stays sharp longer
  • Perma-SHIELD non-stick coating -- reduces friction, heat, and pitch buildup
  • Anti-kickback design on larger profile bits for safer operation
  • Precision-balanced for smooth, vibration-free routing
  • Available in roundover, chamfer, Roman ogee, cove, flush trim, rabbeting, and straight profiles
  • 1/4" and 1/2" shank sizes -- confirm compatibility with your router collet

Common Uses

Freud router bits are used for edge profiling on furniture, cabinetry, and trim work; rabbeting for panel backs and drawer bottoms; flush trimming veneers and laminates; decorative moulding and sign making; and joinery operations including dovetails, box joints, and tongue-and-groove.

Pro Tips

  • Use the 1/2" shank version whenever your router accepts it -- the thicker shank reduces deflection, vibration, and the risk of bit breakage in hardwoods.
  • Take multiple shallow passes rather than one deep cut, especially on hardwoods and large profiles. This produces cleaner results and extends bit life.
  • Feed direction matters -- always feed against the rotation of the bit (left to right on the outside edge of a workpiece). Climb cutting is dangerous and tears the grain.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between 1/4" and 1/2" shank bits?
The 1/2" shank is stiffer and handles vibration better, producing smoother cuts with less chatter. Use 1/2" whenever your router supports it. The 1/4" shank is fine for trim routers and lighter profiling work.

Why does the coating matter?
The Perma-SHIELD coating prevents pitch and resin from bonding to the bit body. This keeps the bit cutting cleanly for longer and reduces the heat that dulls carbide. It is especially noticeable when routing resinous softwoods like pine and cedar.
