Common Uses

Nail into the baseboard (not the floor) with brads to allow floor movement beneath. Hemlock is the preferred softwood for stained moulding. Its pitch-free surface means no bleed-through under paint and no blotching under stain.

Pro Tips

  • Quarter round and base shoe serve the same function -- covering the gap between baseboard and floor. Quarter round has a symmetrical profile; base shoe is flatter. Choose based on aesthetic preference.
  • For paint: apply directly -- no knot sealer needed. For stain: hemlock accepts stain evenly with a pre-stain conditioner. For clear finish: sand to 180-grit and apply water-based polyurethane or lacquer.
  • Nail into baseboard only, not into the floor. The floor must be able to expand and contract freely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between quarter round and base shoe?
Both cover the gap between baseboard and floor. Quarter round has a symmetrical quarter-circle profile. Base shoe is flatter and less prominent. Quarter round is more traditional; base shoe is more subtle.

Why choose hemlock over pine?
Hemlock is pitch-free -- no resin bleed under paint, no sticky sap. It also accepts stain more evenly than pine. Hemlock is the premium softwood choice when finish quality matters.
