Common Uses

Acacia Wood Counter Tops are used for kitchen countertops and island tops, bathroom vanity surfaces, outdoor kitchen and barbecue counters, bar tops, laundry room surfaces, and retail display counters. The natural water resistance of acacia and the outdoor-rated finish make it one of the few real wood countertop options that performs reliably in exposed outdoor environments as well as high-moisture interior spaces.

Pairs Well With

For ongoing maintenance of pre-finished or unfinished acacia tops, Watco Butcher Block Oil and Finish is available at Windsor Plywood. For additional natural wood countertop options, see the Malaysian Oak Butcher Block Countertop and Unfinished Hevea Wood Countertop. For a laminate countertop alternative in a wider range of colours and patterns, see Arborite Counter Top Laminates.

Care and Maintenance

  • Wipe spills immediately -- do not allow standing water to sit on the surface for extended periods, particularly on end grain areas.
  • Clean with a damp cloth and mild dish soap. Avoid bleach-based cleaners, abrasive pads, and acidic cleaners such as vinegar which can strip the oil finish over time.
  • Re-oil the surface every 6 to 12 months with a food-safe wood oil or butcher block oil to maintain water resistance and prevent drying or cracking. Watco Butcher Block Oil is a compatible option available at Windsor Plywood.
  • For outdoor installations, re-oil more frequently -- every 3 to 6 months depending on exposure to sun and rain.

Pro Tips

  • For the unfinished option, apply two to three coats of food-safe butcher block oil before installation, sanding lightly with 220-grit between coats. This seals the wood before it is exposed to kitchen moisture and significantly extends the life of the surface.
  • When cutting to size, support the full length of the slab on both sides of the cut line. Acacia is dense and heavy -- unsupported sections will cause the cut to bind and can split the slab at the end of the cut.
  • Pre-drill all fastener holes. Acacia is a very hard, dense hardwood -- driving screws without pre-drilling will split the wood, particularly near edges.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is acacia wood suitable for outdoor use?
Yes. Acacia is naturally water resistant and the oil finish used on these tops is rated for outdoor applications. For outdoor installations, plan to re-oil the surface every 3 to 6 months depending on sun and rain exposure. Keep the surface oiled to prevent the wood from drying out and cracking over time.

Is the finish food-safe for kitchen countertops?
Yes. The pre-applied finish is a zero VOC hardware oil using a peanut-free formula, rated as food-safe once fully cured. For the unfinished option, apply a food-safe butcher block oil before use in a food preparation area.

What is the difference between the 1" and 1.5" thickness?
The 1.5" thickness is the standard for kitchen countertops and island tops where a substantial, furniture-grade appearance is preferred and where the extra mass contributes to stability. The 1" thickness is suitable for lighter-duty applications such as bathroom vanities, laundry surfaces, and bar tops where the full countertop thickness is less critical.

Can I cut these tops to a custom size on site?
Yes. Acacia cuts cleanly with a standard circular saw or table saw using a fine-tooth wood blade. Pre-drill all fastener locations. Support both sides of the cut fully to prevent binding. Seal all cut edges and any new drilled holes with butcher block oil before installation to prevent moisture absorption at the exposed end grain.

How often does a wood countertop need to be re-oiled?
For indoor kitchen use, re-oil every 6 to 12 months or when the surface starts to look dry or loses its sheen. For outdoor installations, re-oil every 3 to 6 months. Apply oil generously, allow it to penetrate for 20 to 30 minutes, then wipe off the excess. Two thin coats produce better results than one heavy coat.
