Wainscot is decorative panelling applied to the lower portion of a wall, typically from the floor to chair rail height at approximately 32 to 48 inches. It is traditional in dining rooms, hallways, entryways, and staircases, where it adds visual interest and protects the wall from chair backs and daily contact.
Traditional wainscot height is one-third of the wall height, typically 32 to 48 inches from the floor. A chair rail moulding caps the top. In rooms with 9-foot ceilings, 42 to 48 inches is a common proportion. Taller wainscot approaching half the wall height reads as board-and-batten and creates a more dramatic effect.
Windsor Plywood carries wainscot in solid wood species, MDF, and pre-primed options. MDF is the most common choice for painted wainscot due to its smooth surface and consistent profile. Solid wood wainscot is preferred for stained applications or heritage-style interiors where natural material is part of the design.
Installing wood or MDF wainscot over tile in a bathroom introduces moisture risk and is not recommended in wet zones. In a powder room with minimal moisture exposure, panelling over tile is more workable but requires proper sealing. PVC panelling is the appropriate choice for full bathrooms where moisture is a regular concern.
Beadboard has a series of narrow vertical channels running along the face of the panel, giving a traditional cottage or colonial character. Flat panel wainscot uses smooth or frame-and-panel construction for a cleaner, more contemporary look. Both serve the same functional purpose; the choice is purely a matter of the interior style you are working toward.
