Real stone veneer uses thin cuts of natural quarried stone bonded with mortar to a prepared substrate, requiring masonry skills and significant weight management. Manufactured or faux stone panels use engineered materials to replicate the appearance of natural stone at a fraction of the weight. Products like Fusion Stone and Nextstone use polymer or composite panels with through-body colour that install with a clip system without mortar, allowing single-person DIY installation.
Can stone siding products withstand Canadian freeze-thaw cycling?
Yes. Both Fusion Stone and Nextstone are designed for exterior use in Canadian conditions including freeze-thaw cycling. The engineered polymer and composite construction of these products does not absorb moisture the way natural masonry can, which eliminates the freeze-thaw cracking risk that affects unsealed natural stone in severe climates. Proper installation with drainage detailing is still important for long-term exterior performance.
What substrate is required for stone siding installation?
Most panelized stone siding products install over standard exterior wall sheathing with a weather-resistant barrier (housewrap). The substrate must be structurally sound and capable of supporting the panel fastening. Real stone veneer requires a masonry-rated substrate, typically a scratch coat of mortar over metal lath fastened to the sheathing. Is stone siding suitable for interior feature walls?
Yes. Fusion Stone, Nextstone, and similar panelized products are used for interior feature walls, fireplace surrounds, entry columns, and accent walls. For interior applications, the panels are typically fastened with construction adhesive and screws to a drywall or wood substrate. Do not install any polymer or composite panel product within the firebox or in direct contact with high heat.
