In residential renovation applications, wall panelling is primarily decorative and applied over an existing wall structure. The primary framing and drywall provide the structural backing. Panelling should not be relied upon for structural support.

PVC tile or moisture-resistant MDF panelling with a sealed finish is appropriate for bathrooms and laundry rooms where humidity and splash exposure are regular. Natural wood panelling requires thorough sealing on all faces and edges and is better suited for powder rooms with lower moisture exposure than full bathrooms.

Panelling is generally faster to install than drywall because it does not require taping, mudding, sanding, and priming. Floating tongue-and-groove and click-together panels install particularly quickly. For renovation projects, panelling often provides a faster and cleaner result than drywall patching.

Paint-grade MDF and finger-jointed pine panelling are designed to be painted and take paint cleanly. Shiplap and natural wood panelling can be painted, stained, or left natural depending on the design intent. PVC panelling is manufactured in finished colours and is not typically painted.
