      Frequently Asked Questions

What is MDO plywood and what is it used for?
MDO (medium-density overlay) is a plywood panel with a resin-impregnated fibre overlay bonded to one or both faces under heat and pressure. The overlay creates a smooth, consistent surface that accepts paint exceptionally well and resists weathering. MDO is the standard material for exterior signage, concrete forming, painted exterior soffits, and any application requiring a smooth, durable painted surface outdoors.
What makes MDO better than standard plywood for painted applications?
The resin-impregnated overlay on MDO eliminates the grain telegraphing that occurs when painting directly over standard plywood. Standard plywood grain shows through paint as it weathers and moves seasonally. MDO's smooth overlay provides a consistent, stable surface that maintains a smooth painted finish through exterior weather cycling with significantly less preparation than bare plywood.
What thickness of MDO does Windsor Plywood carry?
Windsor Plywood carries MDO in common thicknesses for signage, concrete forming, and exterior applications. Standard thicknesses include 1/2 inch and 3/4 inch in 4x8 panels. One-sided and two-sided overlay configurations are available depending on application requirements. Contact your local Windsor Plywood branch to confirm current MDO stock and thicknesses.
Is MDO suitable for concrete forming?
Yes. MDO is widely used as a concrete forming panel because its smooth, resin-treated overlay releases cleanly from concrete, produces a smooth concrete surface texture, and can be reused multiple times. Coat the MDO face with a release agent before each pour. Properly maintained MDO forming panels can achieve 10 or more pours before the overlay surface deteriorates.
Can MDO be used for interior applications?
Yes. MDO is used indoors for painted cabinetry, painted furniture, and display applications where a smooth, consistent painted surface is required. Indoor use does not take advantage of MDO's weather resistance, so standard MDF or MDF-faced plywood is often a more cost-effective alternative for purely interior painted applications.
