Frequently Asked Questions
What flooring installation tools does Windsor Plywood carry?
Windsor Plywood carries flooring installation accessories including pull bars for tight-space installation of click-lock flooring, tapping blocks for engaging click-lock joints without marring the surface, flooring spacers for maintaining expansion gaps, and marking and cutting accessories for flooring layout. Installation adhesives for glue-down applications and double-sided tape for floating floor underlayment are also available.
What underlayment does Windsor Plywood carry for floating floors?
Windsor Plywood carries foam and combination foam-vapour barrier underlayment for floating laminate and LVP flooring installations. Standard 2mm and 3mm foam underlayment is appropriate for most floating floor applications. Combination underlayment with an integrated vapour barrier is recommended for below-grade applications over concrete. Do not install additional underlayment under flooring products that already have pre-attached padding.
What adhesive is used for glue-down hardwood flooring?
Glue-down hardwood and engineered hardwood flooring requires a trowel-applied urethane or MS polymer flooring adhesive. These adhesives are specifically formulated for wood flooring and provide the elasticity to accommodate seasonal wood movement. Standard construction adhesive is not appropriate for flooring applications. Confirm the correct adhesive type and trowel notch size with Windsor Plywood staff for the specific flooring product you are installing.
What is a moisture barrier and when is it required under flooring?
A moisture barrier (vapour retarder) is a film or coating that slows moisture vapour movement from the concrete slab through the flooring assembly. It is required under all wood and laminate flooring installed on or below grade over concrete. LVP flooring with a waterproof core does not require a separate moisture barrier but benefits from one if the slab has high moisture emission. Test concrete moisture before installing any flooring product over a slab.
What tools do I need to install hardwood flooring myself?
For nail-down solid hardwood flooring, a pneumatic flooring nailer or manual flooring cleat nailer, a compressor, a jamb saw for undercutting door casings, a circular saw and mitre saw for cutting boards, a pull bar, tapping block, and rubber mallet are the essential tools. For floating click-lock flooring, a tapping block, pull bar, spacers, and a circular or jigsaw are sufficient. Windsor Plywood carries the installation accessories and adhesives needed for both methods.
