      Frequently Asked Questions

What tools do I need to install hardwood or laminate flooring?
A quality pull bar, tapping block, rubber mallet, spacers, and a saw capable of cross and rip cuts are the core kit for most floating floor installations. A moisture meter is worth adding if you are working with solid hardwood. Windsor Plywood carries the tools and accessories needed for a clean, professional installation.
Do I need a special saw blade for cutting laminate flooring?
A fine-tooth carbide blade with at least 60 teeth produces the cleanest cuts on laminate without chipping the surface layer. Cutting face-down on a table saw or face-up with a jigsaw minimizes tearout. Using the wrong blade is the most common cause of chipped laminate edges.
What is the purpose of flooring spacers?
Spacers maintain the expansion gap between the flooring and the wall during installation. All floating floors including laminate, LVP, and engineered hardwood expand and contract with temperature and humidity changes. Removing spacers after installation is complete leaves the required clearance for that movement.
What is a pull bar used for in flooring installation?
A pull bar hooks onto the end of a board and lets you tap it tight against the previous row using a mallet, particularly useful for the final rows near a wall where a standard tapping block cannot reach. It keeps joints tight without damaging the flooring edge.
Are flooring nailers worth buying for a single room installation?
For a single room, renting a pneumatic flooring nailer is more cost-effective than purchasing. For larger projects or if you are installing multiple rooms, ownership starts to make sense. Windsor Plywood can advise on whether adhesive, nail, or floating installation is the right method for your specific floor.
