Windsor Plywood carries epoxy resins and hardeners for woodworking applications including river table and live edge fills, void and crack repairs, surface coatings, and structural adhesive bonding. Products are available in formulations suited to deep pours, thin coating layers, and high-clarity tabletop applications.
Casting epoxy is formulated for deep pours with a slower cure rate that allows heat from the curing reaction to dissipate without cracking or yellowing. Tabletop epoxy is designed for thin coats applied over a surface for protection and gloss, with a faster cure and a harder final surface. Using casting epoxy as a tabletop coat or vice versa produces poor results.
Mix epoxy thoroughly but slowly to avoid whipping air into the resin. After pouring, pass a heat gun or propane torch briefly over the surface at a distance of 6 to 8 inches to reduce surface tension and pop bubbles. Work in a warm environment above 20 degrees Celsius, as cold epoxy is thicker and traps more air.
Standard epoxy resins are not UV-stable and will yellow and degrade with prolonged sun exposure. For outdoor applications, use a UV-resistant epoxy formulation or apply a UV-stable topcoat over cured epoxy. Ecopoxy and similar UV-rated products are engineered for outdoor use. Windsor Plywood can advise on which products in stock are rated for exterior applications.
Calculate the volume of the void in cubic inches and convert to fluid ounces. One fluid ounce is approximately 1.8 cubic inches. Add 10 to 15 percent for waste and overflow. Pour in layers no deeper than the product's recommended maximum single-pour depth to avoid exothermic overheating, which causes cracking and yellowing in thick pours.
