Cypress Wood for Indoor & Outdoor

Baldcypress is a domestic softwood that grows in the southeastern United States. It produces a natural preservative oil called cypressene that makes old-growth cypress extremely resistant to rot, insects, and weathering. It has a straight grain, moderate hardness, and excellent dimensional stability. Cypress is used for exterior siding, boat building, docks, and any application requiring natural decay resistance.

Old-growth cypress and western red cedar are comparable in natural decay resistance. New-growth cypress is less rot-resistant than old-growth as it contains less of the heartwood with natural oils. Cedar is more consistently available in western Canada. Both accept stain and paint well. For projects in western Canada, cedar is more commonly stocked and is the standard exterior wood recommendation.

Cypress is used for exterior siding, trim, decking, boat building, docks, raised garden beds, and any application requiring a naturally rot-resistant wood. Indoors, cypress is used for panelling, flooring, and furniture. Its fine grain and attractive appearance suit both painted and stained finishes.

Cypress works well with both hand and power tools. It cuts, shapes, and sands without significant difficulty. Fresh cypress can have a greasy feel from the natural oils, which may require light sanding between finish coats. The natural oils in heartwood cypress can slow adhesive curing times; wipe cut surfaces with mineral spirits before gluing for best adhesion.
