      Frequently Asked Questions

What construction lumber does Windsor Plywood carry?
Windsor Plywood carries SPF (spruce-pine-fir) and Douglas fir framing lumber in standard dimensional sizes including 2x4, 2x6, 2x8, 2x10, and 2x12, along with posts, beams, and engineered lumber products. Both standard and pressure-treated grades are available for structural framing, decks, and exterior applications.
What is SPF lumber and is it the same as framing lumber?
SPF stands for spruce-pine-fir and refers to a species group of North American softwoods that are graded together for structural use. The group includes white spruce, black spruce, engelmann spruce, lodgepole pine, jack pine, and alpine fir. These species are visually similar and have comparable strength properties, so they are graded and sold together as a standardized structural product. SPF is the dominant framing lumber species group across most of Canada.
What grade of framing lumber should I use for standard residential construction?
No. 2 and Better is the standard grade for most residential framing applications. No. 2 allows larger knots and other characteristics than Select Structural or No. 1 grades, but provides adequate strength for standard stud wall framing, joists, and rafters when designed to code. For beams, headers, and long-span structural elements where strength matters more, use Select Structural or engineered lumber products.
What is the difference between nominal and actual lumber dimensions?
Nominal dimensions are the traditional names for lumber sizes (2x4, 2x6, etc.). Actual dimensions are smaller due to drying and surfacing. A nominal 2x4 has actual dimensions of approximately 1-1/2 inches by 3-1/2 inches. A nominal 2x6 is actually 1-1/2 by 5-1/2 inches. When planning any construction project, use actual dimensions rather than nominal sizes for accurate material calculations and structural design.
Does Windsor Plywood sell construction lumber by the piece or only by volume?
Windsor Plywood sells construction lumber to both retail and contractor customers by the piece, bundle, or larger volume depending on quantity.
