Windsor Plywood Construction Lumber

Windsor Plywood carries standard construction lumber dimensions including 2x4, 2x6, 2x8, 2x10, and 2x12 in various lengths. Post sizes including 4x4, 4x6, 6x6, and larger timbers are also available depending on location and stock. Lengths typically range from 8 feet to 20 feet.

Spruce-pine-fir (SPF) is the standard framing species group in Canada, referring to spruce, pine, and fir species that share similar structural properties and are graded together. Douglas fir is also used, particularly in Western Canada, and provides higher strength values for applications requiring larger spans or heavier loads.

Structural lumber grades are assigned based on allowable defects, knot size, grain angle, and other factors that affect strength. No. 2 and Better is the standard grade for most residential framing. Select Structural and No. 1 grades provide higher allowable design values for applications requiring longer spans or heavier loads, such as ridge beams and headers.

Untreated construction lumber is not appropriate for outdoor applications exposed to moisture, ground contact, or weather. It will rot, warp, and deteriorate relatively quickly. Use pressure-treated lumber for all outdoor structural applications including deck framing, fence posts, and sleepers. Cedar and naturally durable species are alternatives for above-ground outdoor use.

Store lumber flat on level stickers, small strips of wood placed every 16 to 24 inches across the stack, to allow airflow while supporting the pile evenly. Keep it covered from rain but allow air circulation. Lumber stacked on the ground or in an unsupported pile will warp significantly. Acclimatize lumber in or near the project space before installation.
