Knobs work well on doors where a single point of contact is sufficient. Pulls are better on drawers because they distribute the pulling force across two mounting points, reducing wear and providing a more comfortable grip on heavy drawers. Upper cabinet doors typically use knobs or small pulls; lower cabinet drawers and doors typically use bar pulls or cup pulls.
What finish is most durable for cabinet hardware?
Brushed nickel and matte black are among the most durable finishes for everyday cabinet hardware use. Polished chrome and polished brass show fingerprints readily and may require more frequent cleaning. Lacquer-coated finishes can wear through in high-use applications. Solid metal hardware with a mechanical finish generally outperforms plated alternatives in longevity.
What is the standard drilling template for bar pulls on drawers?
The most common bar pull drilling centres are 96mm and 128mm on centre. Measuring from the centre of one mounting hole to the centre of the other gives the drilling centre. Confirm the specification for your chosen pull before drilling. Replacing mis-drilled holes in cabinet faces requires filling and refinishing.
Do I need to replace hinges when upgrading cabinet doors?
If you are changing from overlay to inset doors, or changing the overlay amount, yes. Hinges need to match the door style and overlay specification. If you are simply upgrading existing overlay doors with new hardware and keeping the same door configuration, the existing hinge mounting holes in the cabinet can typically be reused with compatible hinges.
